    [Misc] Twain scanning MP161 & 201

I haven't done a lot of Twain setups, but I have done a few without issue.

I just installed a used MP201 in client's office. They have multiple MFP's, and primarily use SMB scanning; However, I configured their MP161 some time ago for Twain scanning that they use with one of their in-house programs.
They asked me if I could do the same for the MP201. "no problem!", I quickly answered .
Installed software, opened their program, selected the MP201 from the list of scanners, and nothing happens. ZERO response, and no error on either end.
I then installed a program I've used myself (NAPS2) to test function. Same thing ...no response.
    Turned off Firewall...no response.
Then I tried the other PC where the MP161 had been set up, and they admittedly haven't used it in a while....no response.
I figured it had to be something in their network, and told them I'd do some homework.
I came back to my shop where I have another MP201, installed the twain driver on my Laptop. Added the profile to NAPS2.....no response
Here's 1 interesting thing....The only other program that I'm aware of that I have to scan with is Foxit reader.
I selected the MP201, hit SCAN, and bam! IT WORKS.
    I'm stumped
By the way. The customer is on Windows 7, and my laptop is Win 10, so it doesn't seem to be an OS issue

Anybody had any issues like this and have any suggestions to offer.

    Thanks a lot!

Sometimes, after installing TWAIN software, I've had to reboot the copier to get everything communicating.

    ...just a thought.

It may not explain the FoxIt Reader thingy, but I remember needing to open TCP port 1022 more than once or twice...even though the firewall was already off.

Between this and the asspain that SMB scanning has become FTP scanning seems to be nicer every day.

Not when you have a software that requires you to do a pull, TWAIN or WIA, scan into the software. Usually if there are only one or two PC that have to do this, it is easier to sell them a small stand alone scanner(s) connected USB directly to and setting next to the PC(s).

            Hi

I've had a few issues like this previously , allow me to tell you the course of action I would take :

            1) Update the network firmware on the machine. Last thing you want is the system to be rejecting your scans because of a firmware update.

            2) look for and download the latest version of desktop binder. Its the software that works with the twain driver and normally works fine with it. Also make sure your twain drivers are installed.

            3) Alternate software that can also work with Ricoh twain scanners is Microsoft Office Word. Open the program, make sure its a new document then do this

hold the "ALT key" and in this sequence enter
            I
            then
            P
            then
            S

this should open the twain program in Word for scanning into the program.

Let me know if this works

I had a similar issue with NAPS2 once and the workaround was to enable the Legacy.

The problem is that the resolution was very poor. Even changing the resolution settings it had no effect on the result of the scan.

I ended up making use of another Twain software (advanced scan to PDF)

                DesktopBinder? Completely unnecessary.
I appreciate your time, but almost all of this was mentioned in my initial post. I mentioned that I CAN scan to Foxit PDF reader, so even if scanning to MS word worked, that doesn't help me with the program my client has the issue with, and the fact that it simply doesn't respond to most other programs

Thanks. But 3 diffrent PC's with 3 different OS's are acting exactly the same:
                  Win7 /32bit
                  Win7/ 64 bit
                  Win 10/ 32 bit (tablet))
Naps32 isn't the real issue here. I just pointed out that there are muliple programs that are unresponsive. The program I'm interessted in getting working is there in house program (The name escapes me, but I don't think it's relevant)

                    Re: Twain scanning MP161 & 201

I had a similar issue a few years back, where for whatever reason, the Ricoh TWAIN driver didn't work very well with the customer's home grown app. It did work, but was SUPER slow.

I did a Google search, and found an inexpensive piece of software that would TWAIN scan from a folder. I don't remember the name of it, but it was easy to find. I think it was something like $75 per copy, and there was a free trial available.

I set the MFP up to scan to a folder. The user would run their app, and was able to TWAIN scan from the folder...and it was quite fast.

It actually saved them time. It took less time to push scan to the folder and walk away with the originals, rather than needing to make 2 trips to the copier, and potentially losing (or at least messing up) confidential documents.

I think this was it (been a few years, and the price has gone up...)

Thanks for this Ken. definitely something to consider.
My next line of attack is going to be to try the WIA driver, which I have even less experience with, but I feel like it might be able to do what they want

I did say desktop-binder, sorry about that I meant desktop-binder lite which is a lot simpler and easier to use. In any case try updating the firmware as I've noticed that this did resolve some scanning problems I had previously with Windows 10 (and most recently Windows 7 after the latest updates).
