MP161 won't go into SP mode

I am having trouble with a Ricoh MP 161. After replacing the upper fuser roller, I got an error SC542 because I accidentally left a screw loose on the heat lamp. I assume that's what caused the error. For good measure I replaced the lamp and thermistor.

I can't get into service mode (aka SP mode) to reset the code. I've tried "clear modes" (the yellow button) then 107 and hold the clear/stop button for at least five seconds. I've tried it too many times to count. Nothing happens. I've also tried 806182.

I tested the operator panel buttons with an ohm meter. They tested good.

    Any suggestions?

Check on the power board the fuse , if all are ok start without fuser wait a minute and check if you can enter to service mode. (806182 work only on new machines like mp c3003)

If that machine is in a strictly controlled environment or something, please ignore what follows as it will be stupid and useless.
However, if that's not the case, you might make sure the plastic buttons on the control panel aren't getting stuck.
It might not hurt to take the control panel apart and clean the keys and the frame they are installed in to make sure there isn't some goo impeding their travel.
This might even be stupider, but I've seen where people jab at the keys on the control panel and fail. It's been my experience that it works better to roll your fingers across the keys, as if the keys are not jabbed correctly they will get jammed part way down and not connect with the switches.
The plastic parts inside the control panel might be broken too. That is a pretty old machine after all.
Sorry if this is a waste of time.

There is a setting in User Tools where the machine administrator can disable service access.

As slimslob said, check User Tools / System Settings / Administrator Tools / Service Mode Lock isn't on. That'll stop you getting into SP modes. What sort of 161 is it? L or SP?
It's 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.

            Hit it.

Not a waste of time. I appreciate the suggestion.

Prior to my original post, I removed the control panel and tested these five buttons with an ohm meter: Yellow, 1, 0, 7, Red. They all tested good. This unit is remarkably clean with about 78k pages on the counter. This morning after reading your suggestion, I pressed every button on the control panel. Oddly, the user tools button works. However, it just goes right back to SC:542.

No change. Thanks for the reply.

When I open user tools and press settings, it immediately returns to SC:542.

I can't get past User Tools. When I select System Settings, it returns to SC:542.

It just says Aficio MP 161. There is no L, SP or anything.

                  Thanks.

I called the previous service company whose sticker is still on the unit. They said their tech locked it. It sounds like they do it as a normal course of business. They refused to give me the unlock code without a fee and offered to have a manager call me. I am waiting on the manager to call.

Funny thing about 3 weeks ago I encountered a Lanier version of the same machine also with a fuser code and also locked out of entering service mode.
Unfortunately for the company that locked the service mode, rather than being held hostage, the customer just bought a refurbished MP3351 from me instead.

Just a thought but usually, those companies have more than one tech so they have to keep it simple for all to remember. Try the model number or the last part of the phone number from the previous service company...maybe the ID number if it has one of those stickers on it.

I just checked on my personal MP161SPF. If you can, give this a try; it worked for me when I tested the scenario.

If administrator authentication is on and the service mode lock is set, but you can log in:

Press 'User Tools' and choose to log in. Enter 'admin' for the user name and do not enter a password (default is blank).
Scroll to 'System Settings', press and hold the # key and press 'OK'. You should be prompted to reset the system settings to factory default, choose to do so.
You will be logged out. Service mode lock will be turned off.

If you can't log in with the default credentials, try using 'supervisor' as the user and as before no password. This will only allow you to reset the admin password. You will likely have to do it from WIM if the SC error prevents access to the menus.

What a bunch of scumbags, I can understand this if it was a leased machine, but if the customer owns it and it is no longer under contract that is BS.
