An SC981 is a HDD error. Have you tried disconnecting the HDD controller from the copier for testing? If that takes care of the code, you could try running some of the SP4911 options with the HDD connected.
According to the manual, it could also be a poor connection in the HDD wiring or corrupted software/firmware.
