SAVIN 2535 - Laser Unit Question

Machine was working fine. Removed drum unit. Did not remove laser unit. Used toner vac to suck up small amount of toner around the laser unit. Did not put vac on LD unit just under it and on the laser unit housing (along the shield glass area). Reinstalled drum unit. Tryed to make a copy. The copy came out with alot of thin lines accross the page and a few words from the copy were barely visable and stretched.

Turned off/on the machine, tryed the copy again and got a sc326 then a sc322. Replaced the entire unit and machine is working fine.

Did I zap the LD unit with the vac? I read a few posts with sc322 and common causes are dirty switches, faulty sync board, or toner getting into the laser diodes. If I remove laser unit and blow it out to clean would that possibly blow toner into the LD unit and cause a sc322 also?

What is the proper procedure when cleaning around laser unit so I don't run into this problem again.

    Thank you.

It's possible the LD detector board got a belt off your vac when you were hoovering away.

I'd say the more likely cause is the LD drive board itself getting clogged with toner, it does take them out. I've had this on a couple of Adonis-C4's that constantly came up with SC322. New laser diode cured the fault.

With regard to cleaning these puppies, my advice would be to take the laser unit out of the machine and blast it off with a tin of compressed air. Saves the risk of belting it with static then. Vac the rest of the machine with the LD unit out.
It's 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.

    Hit it.

Is it possible you knocked the LD ribbon cable as I have seen some strange CQ problems with this.

No I don't think it has anything to do with the ribbon cable. I switched between working and non working laser units a few times and made sure the cable was plugged in. Also when I was cleaning I did not remove the plastic and metal covers that protect the ld unit.

Im going with the static or toner damaging the ld unit.

I will start using the compressed air on it if needed and remove when cleaning.

Is it necessary to open and clean inside the laser unit at any time? Or would that increase chances of contaminating the LD. I am sure a little toner and dust will enter the unit when removing and cleaning the shield glass. Thats why I choose to suck the toner off of the shield glass instead of removing the glass and wiping.

I always opened the LD and cleaned it, if you are carefull you should be fine.
