A fimware upgrade can fix this but I suspect you have an unstable mains supply, in which case the firmware will make no difference.

I agree with your diagnostic I will also try using a good line conditioner after updating the firmware. A course the clients needs to purchase it. If you are able to isolate the problem this way then the client will have to hire and electrician to check line conditions.
