    [Misc] MP4001

What would cause (other than the obvious which is not obvious) copier to go through toner that is not getting the number of prints/copies as should???

The transfer unit has a large build up of waste toner. The last service call in January I installed toner the copier had only 11,500 copies since last toner in Sept. 2017. The transfer unit was very full with only 7,000 copies made since January did not ck the toner cartridge. Copies look fine: no signs of problem with developer. Copier is used more for printing than copying according to customer.

    Thanks!!!

    Re: MP4001

I can see one to three possible causes.
    1. Under utilization. A 4001 was intended to be making at least 10K to 15K a month.
    2. Low number of average pages per job.
    3. After market supplies.

I think the machine will apply toner periodically to lubricate the transfer unit blade, from memory there might be an application adjustment ssp 2964, or maybe the unit not camming in/out properly

Process control and ID patch. Ran at power on, after 24 hours since last time ran and after normally 10 jobs.

          1. Customer is using thick paper without indicating it.
          2. a lot of jams
          3. ...

The first place to look is SP 2001. If your number is over 1750, the machine is starting to over compensate for the condition of the drum. This unit plus the next model after it has known issues with running dirty and blowing out toner all over the place. The mag roller will start to layer a coating of toner on it (caused by the low temp rating of the toner) causing the doctor blade gap to change. This in turn will cause the patch value to change and in return cause the machine to add more toner to compensate for that change. Its a vicious cycle on this unit and its a rare day when we can get PM yield. Some techs will de-tone the machine before running SP 2801 and it has helped the yield on both the toner and the PM.

When you do the PM its important that you cover the toner entrance where the toner bottle meets up with the DV unit. Also do this if you want to de-tone the machine before running SP 2801. The DV mag roller and doctor blade needs to be checked\cleaned at every EM. Using crumpled up paper is a easy way to clean the roller, I would stay away from using Scotch Brite.I scrape the Doctor blade also with a sheet of paper folded up. Even though Ricoh changed their toner for this model earlier in production the Mag roller is still coating up. Follow the service manual on doing a proper PM on this machine. There are a few SP modes that need to be executed after the Drum and or Developer are changed.

Two other point of failures on this machine that can cause your issue is the Drum ground bering and the connection for the Drum Charge roller.
Plenty of other good info on this in this forum

            Good luck
