Wipe HDD

I am a Sharp/ Xerox tech and we are sending a few copiers back on lease return. The customer would like us to wipe the HDD, but is there anything that we should know first. Is there an automated way on a Ricoh and how would we get there. If we have to do it manually, can we just install a blank HDD and it boot up fine.

Models dealing with - MP4002SP, MP301SPF, and MP6002SP. I have not seen the copiers yet, some may not even have HDD.

You have to access Service mode and execute SP 5832 (HDD Formatting ALL). Some customers will accept that as a wipe, but we have also run into quite a few customers who wanted us to remove the HDD's so they could Shred it themselves. All of those models will be the same as far as the SP mode and service mode access code. Yes, you can install a blank HDD and all will be well, as long as it's the correct size and what not.

if you replace the HDD, a store hdd of same size will work, there is a format procedure when a new one is installed, just four SP modes to do that.

As FrohnB mentioned, you can use the Service mode to simply format the HDD and call it a day if they don't need an actual data erasure. However, depending on the customer/contract, you may need to do a proper wipe. Official Ricoh policy is to either do a HDD surrender or use the Erase All Memory option, both of which conform to the DoD/NSA standard of data deletion. All 3 listed models will have the Erase Memory option and the 4002/6002 will have HDDs installed (required to operate). The 301 I don't believe has a HDD option and stores data on the board/chip.

To use the Erase All Memory option:
1. Disconnect communication cables connected to the machine.
2. The machine administrator logs in from the control panel via [User Tools].
3. Press [System Settings].
4. Press [Administrator Tools].
5. Press [down arrow] eight times. (May vary per machine)
6. Press [Erase All Memory].
7. Select the method of overwriting.If you select [NSA] or [DoD], proceed to step 11. If you select [Random Numbers], proceed to step 8.
8. Press [down arrow].
9. Press [Change].
10. Enter the number of times that you want to overwrite using the number keys, and then press [#].
11. Press [Erase]. Deleting Data on the Hard Disk
12. Press [Yes].
13. When overwriting is completed, press [Exit], and then turn off the main power.

The process may take several hours depending on the model, the data stored, method of overwrite, etc. It is worth noting that those machines likely had DOSS (Data Overwrite) enabled and most data on the HDD is already properly deleted, but Ricoh would not consider that enough.


If you are simply going to remove/replace the HDDs, you only need to make sure a new HDD is installed and formatted in SP Mode to ensure proper functionality.

Hi there!
Under the ID-code 984416 you can order the HDD-option for the MP 301.
After reinstalling and formating the HDD execute sp 5-853-001 for uploading the stamp-datas. Forgot this once, and this was the customer who "needs" the stamp-function.

They should dispose of the HDD themselves. Handing over the drive to another could open themselves up to litigation.

The built in HDD format is not perfect, neither is performing a manual format on a PC.

If the MFP has the Data Overwrite Security Unit installed and configured there is no need to wipe anything data wise. You still need to erase/initialize all address books. Before DOSU, Ricoh's published policy used to be remove the HDD and hand it to the customer's IT. If they wished to erase it and return it that was their option.
