On a SP4510 the customer replaced toner with a OEM cartridge and got the message "set toner cartridge correctly" , the old cartridge was generic. I tried a new cartridge out of the box and got the same message. Any ideas are highly appreciated.

Give the contacts a spritz with contact cleaner and check that the prongs of the machine side contact aren't bent or misshapen. -
Re: Ricoh SP4510, "Set toner cartridge correctly"
If the customer takes a run-up fitting the drum, then uses a sledgehammer to push it in, the contacts on the sensor boards can be bent. If they are, they can't be reliably straightened, just replace them. There are two, one for the PCU and one for the toner. It's 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.

You can try bending them back, and they may even look right, but the machine will still tell you off.Comment
