According to the Troubleshooting guide, if your getting a sc370, engine firmware must be at 1.25.08 or higher. A sc442 indicates engine firmware needs to be at 1.31.01 or higher.

Gonna be slightly embarrassing if he's swapped out boards without doing FW

Good point. The engine firmware may reside on the bcu.

What was the original problem. I just had 370 on a MPC4504 because the belt was in pieces on top of the machine and now I am off on leave.
          Merry Chrismas everyone.

The center sensor is being blocked because the shutter is not opening all the way. Yes it could be firmware but I would check the shutter first. Had this at an account that was a 2 hour drive one way. Removed the shutter and all was good.

If you are referring to the shutter over the ID sensor, on the ITB unit check that the latch cam on the back is not damaged. If it is it will allow the ITB to move slightly when the shutter is opened. (voice of experience)
