    firmware update

Im trying to update firmware on Aficio 3260c, so, can I just buy any SD card and copy .fwu files on It from My Computer and then make a update on machine, or have to order a SD card with fimware files from Ricoh disributor.

    Thanks...

Nop, any SDcard will do the job, just create a folder on the card called "romdata" and put the firmware in the created folder

Be careful when you load the firmware files - the first few generations of machines that used the SD cards would only recognize the 64Mb of the card, but had 70+Mb of firmware if you had all the options installed. Lucky for me the machine complained about a "corrupt" file, but it still took a lot of extra time and a call to tech support to figure out what was going on.

So can the new machines handle a higher capacity card? I remember trying to load 2018 firmware onto a 2G card and the upload to the machine failed. I havent tried it since but I know that the MP4000 and others will require 2 64M cards.

Not really sure - I have 3 64M cards, so I can prep a second card while I'm loading the first. I never had to try, but I've been told larger cards work even on old machines as long as you start with it completely empty and don't load more than 64M on it. 2G is the absolute limit for anything formatted FAT16, but again I never had to experiment after I got my 64M cards...

            Maybe that is the secret.

...so it looks like the newer machines don't have a problem with bigger cards - wonder where the cutoff point is

I´ve worked with a 1Gb card for more than 4 years full of trash in it, photos etc, and its always worked fine. uploaded firmware into romdata folder, all katanas fwu files at the same time no problem at all.

I've been using a 1Gb card for ages and only problem was when I had 500mb of photos on it - wouldn't work.
Someone tried a 2Gb today in some new machines and it wouldn't work - I seem to remember something about a limit on Ricoh machines.

as i was told in school, 1 gb is pushing it but will work 2 gb will not work because it times out before accessing the firmware.

Any SD should work, but some machines do not read large capacity SDs. You MUST have a folder on the card Named romdata, then under romdata you will have the product code folder eg (b089) then under the product code folder you should put the .fwu file.

Have had issues with a couple of cheaper brand SD cards in the past. I have had no issues with up to 1GB SanDisk cards. Myself and everyone I talk to seem to feel that 1GB is the cutoff. Gets scary above that.

I do know a couple of guys who set up cards like copytech22 says above. They load every firmware known to man on to one card this way using romdata\product code\firmware, and they say it works fine. I just don't have the guts to try this. Especially with SD cards being so cheap.

I have many cards of various capacities (up to 1GB), but only keep one machine's firmware on each card. Also this way you don't need the product code folder. Just romdata folder with all the firmware in it for that machine.

Oh, and don't highlight all the firmware and have it update all at once. It might work 90% of the time. But can work out bad. I have seen this first hand. Now I do one at a time, and turn machine off and on between each firmware.

                              Regards
