Is your paper size setting correct?
Can you visually see any broken fingers on the separation craw?
How far past the fuser does it go? Does it make it through the first side and upon pulling it back in does it jam? -

Re: mp c3504ex J014
If so, check what the paper does through the paper path of the ADF. In other words, if you select duplex, but the df just feeds the paper in the top and out the bottom of the df, then your juction gate and/or solinoid, is stuck. The error will result, as the machine is expecting the duplex sensor to trigger and not the document exit sensor.
Do an output check on the duplex gate on the df (in output check, option 6 in the sp mode). If it does not actuate, you know where your problem is....Press the GREEN button!!Comment

So does it do a single sided copy fine?

You know, if you actually pull the ADF rear cover off and look, you can see for yourself. And yes, it requires a little effort on your part.NEVER ASSUME ANYTHINGComment

Re: mp c3504ex J014
you should see the actuator arm that is attached to the solenoid when you pop off the rear cover of the df. I have had a solenoid assembly fall apart (not sure how) but between the plunger and the return spring both coming adrift, duplexing would have been impossible.
Try to actuate the solenoid arm and see if the junction gate moves. These sometimes bind up (happened a lot on mp2352 and 2852 machines). Sometimes it just wants a bit of grease in the joints to get it going and keep it working.

Re: mp c3504ex J014
On older models, 1027 and 2027, I have had the home position on the gate stick to the pad that is supposed to reduce noise when the gate returns to home. Moving the gate by hand releases it and duplex feeding works. After setting unused it sticks again. I finally gave up, said to hell with the noise and removed the pads.Press the GREEN button!!Comment
