have message on op panel chek ip address subnet mask andgateway.am able to print tio copier but cant get rid of error message

This message is because the Default Gateway Address is not on the local subnet as calculated from the IP / Subnet Mask - i.e. a network node with an IP of 192.168.1.128 and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 would require a gateway in the 192.168.1.x range. You would still be able to communicate with it as long as you were still on the local subnet, but nodes on say 192.168.16.x would not.

so i have an ip of10.150.1.109 gateway of192.168.1.1.so the gateway is larger than ip, thats the problem?and yes i can still print to tha machn.second issue is i still cant get scan to folder to work. copier is 2238c ricoh.

That is an odd combination but I'm guessing the default gateway is a router that doesnt assign DHCP. What is the Subnet mask?
In sofar as SMB scanning, have you ever set this up before? Are you familiar with the requirements? What sort of error(s) are you getting?

There's something wrong with that setup. A class a network with a class c gateway? And, they are both non-routable ip's for their ranges.

Recheck all of the settings. If the gateway is a class c private, then the network should be a class c network---generally.

got rid of error message about gateway. subnet 255.255.255 . no have not been able to set up for scan to folder.can scan to e mail. folowed install instrctn frm ricoh . i.t guy says that vista is differant for scan to file. so still waiting for i.t to come up with answer

Vista set up is not different, the permissions for the folder are in a different place but as long as you set the folder for full control for everyone (or authenticated user) then you should be able to browse to the folder from the control panel and set the path that way.
For Vista make sure all your firmware is up to date.

folder is shared fully . when i opened sharing got name from printer onto foder still cant scan to folder.cant seem to find whats wrong.believe drivers are latest and greatest down loaded em week ago. smb \\name\scans.

Make sure NetBios over TCPIP is enabled. (Properties of TCPIP)
Valid username and password for that workstation or server.

NetBIOS is just another of the MANY communications protocols used on a modern network - One of its main functions is to allow the use of human readable names when accessing resources on another computer. i.e. \\MyComputer\SharedFolder instead of 192.168.1.1\SharedFolder.

I think you'd be best served investing in the Net+ for Dummies book. Excuse the "for Dummies" I'm not trying to be a jerk, it's just that those books are pretty good at explaining how stuff works from the "I know nothing" level and leaving you with a good working understanding. You can ignore the ISO OSI model stuff, and dig right into understanding TCP/IP protocols and file and print sharing - those are the most important for what we do.

There is A LOT of info on the net. Unfortunately, trying to find info at a skill level you feel comfortable at can be a bit difficult.

Even with all of our experience, we still end up running into issues that require looking up information.

Many times, you just want to have enough knowledge and understanding to be able to "talk the talk" with the IT person, or the IT contact. That will add validity to you as a tech, because IT people (not all of them) love to rip people a new one.

If you get down enough info to do basic troubleshooting, then you'll find that as time goes on, things just get easier.

Find a few tutorials and spend a bit of time tinkering in the shop if you can. Try doing tests with a laptop and a x-over cable, changing various settings to see what they do. Also, work with various scanning settings, as this will make you a pretty good troubleshooter.

Yeah, Shadow1 meant no disrespect, they have really good networking books that keep it as a level that most people need to know.

I got really deep into it at the undergraduate level, and much of it is not used daily, although what I learned does relate.

exactly - Learning more about networking doesn't make anybody with any sense feel any smarter - if anything it has the opposite effect: every bit of knowledge you gain just opens your eyes wider to how much IT stuff there really is out there. I meet IT professionals every day who could BURY me, dig me up, then CREMATE me on Citrix or Exchange or etc. but would blow coffee out their nose if they had to set up an LPR printer. If I ever master IT stuff I'm gonna just jump right in to brain surgery, then I'll polish off that annoying little Unified Theory thing the quantum physicists are always griping about.
