SMTP Relay for copiers in 2020

We have used Gmail to relay email from several hundred copiers. We did this first by using the Less Secure Apps setting. Then, when we learned that this setting will go away in February 2021, we started using app passwords with 2 factor authentication. This method is messier, and we're looking for the new best universal solution. So far, we think Sendgrid looks good.

I would love to hear this lovely community's thoughts on what you all are using and have used for SMTP relay service.

    Thanks very much in advance.

We have a few customers who use Gmail to scan to, Looks like we may have to migrate them over to Office 365 for them to continue to scan to email.

Actually following the link update you provided Google claimed they're suspending turn off LSA.

Good thread though. I will be also interested in what solution are used.

At some point, they will turn it off. Gmail is bloody awful. Clients on O365 just work, we have absolutely no issues with O365 and app passwords. Gmail just aren't on the level MS are when it comes to commercial solutions.

At the end of the day, this is a customer issue. We used to run customers through our own SMTP when they didn't have the facility or capability. Now, we are quite firm about it. You provide the working account, that is it, end of.

If Gmail won't work with app password, on 587 TLS or 465 SSL, then you get on to Gmail support. Most of the customers using Gmail don't have static IPs or a clue about their domain, so open relay is usually out of the question. It's hard enough getting a password out of them. Any customers with any clue, use O365.

You might want to check with GoDaddy. I believe their smtp.secureserver.net still supports port 80 with no security. The other option is to have the customer install a software relay such as seunnel on one of their computers.

Re: SMTP Relay for copiers in 2020

I use the free version of SMTP2go in probably the majority of my setups now, and have been using it for several years and found it very reliable.
As mentioned above, a lot of times it's difficult just to get a password for an email account from the client - much less have someone to configure a new account with their Host to use specifically for scanning.

Grant it, with me being a one man operation, I'm mostly dealing with smallish workgroups, so the restrictions aren't an issue at all. But it still allows for up to 25 uses/hour and 1000/ month at my last check, which is more than sufficient in most cases (for me).
The only hitch is that it doesn't work with free email accounts (IE: Gmail, hotmail, etc.) so the customer must have an abc@xyzcompany.com type email address.

It takes less than 5 minutes once you've done it a few times.
