Thank you both. I will give this a shot, but I checked the working device and it has that set to 1.

Have you gone into SOP service mode ,"Device Screen settings" and enable "Screen device always-connection setting"-set to active.
Also Human Detection sensor to inactive. Is the card reader registered to the machine?-Network/Interface settings-then External Interface software settings.Navigate to Select IC card reader, select Proximity Card reader, and plug the reader into the screen.Select do not use if Kofax reader is used/kofax solution installed on device.
Not sure if this will help......

I have not done this yet, and I'm not sure where that setting is. I've looked through just about every SP mode setting and think something like that would have jumped out at me, but it's certainly possible I missed something.

I'll give this a shot too, although the machine that does work has this set to active.

What's odd is that the MFD whose card reader works does not have the card reader registered. I spent hours going through combinations of registering, unplugging/plugging back in, rebooting, trying with it unregistered, balancing on one foot, etc etc. The best I was able to get is that I could get the card reader to work, up until the machine rebooted, then it would stop working again.
