    Gestetner 3222

Hi,this is my first post here.

My wife has the Gestetner 3222 about a year and the technician was tell her that she must change the drum cause it reaches the number of 10000 copies...

Does anybody knows the life of the drum..and the cost for replacing?

    Thank you

PCU (Photo Conductor Unit or drum)for one of these copiers should do 60,000 copies, not uncommon for them to do 80k. Wouldn't recommend you fit a rebuilt PCU as after 60+k the drive gears are past their best. Wouldn't know what they carge in your part of the world but a competent Tech should fit the drum, check the fuser and clean the optics in well under an hour.

It's hard to try to stay busy for that next 50 minutes after the tech thoroughly cleans the machine. Bathroom breaks that get paid for by the customer I guess.

When I went to an account once to fix a slight problem after a tech was there a day or so ago, the information I received from dispatch was that the tech was there about four hours that day. Uh, it was a 1035. I was like, "Damn, on a 1035?" I STILL had to install new fuser bearings. It was in a Vegas casino, so I guess he worked on the machine for 30 and gambled the next 3 1/2, then called dispatch to close the call.

Anyway, in a billable hour, this machine should run just fine after a little cleaning and lubing. The cost for these drums, if I remember, are around $200 US, and it's just one complete assembly that goes in almost as easy as changing the toner. The machine will go through a calibration that takes about two minutes. I could see the tech saying that if, somehow, the assembly went 100,000 copies, rather than 10,000 copies. If the technician is looking at the copier meter to determine the drum replacement, he's incorrect, as the drum has its own counter in the copier. The machine gives a drum life warning as it gets close to 60,000 copies.

The alarm only appears if someone hasn't turned it off in service program mode, something my former employers insisted on during set-up. But you are right that the meter isn't reliable for determining drum count. An SMC report, or a check of drum count in service mode 7 will be more accurate.
