[Misc] what is the harddisk format of ricoh copier?

Hi guys, what is the harddisk format for a ricoh copier anyway?

I have been using FAT 32 all the time.

but everytime when i plugged that onto a ricoh copier machine. It will prompt for format again.
i have tried to check from one of the copier just to find out the format. i pulled it out and plug it onto my computer.
then i went to check it from the computer management > Disk management.

The harddisk turn out as unknown and not initialized

It's a proprietary format, likely some variant of EXT3 or 4 and can only be read by the device unless you go to extraordinary, and extra-legal methods. The core operating system of most Ricoh machines is NetBSD, which is similar to Unix.

Windows can't natively read *nix file formats so it will always tell you it's an unknown file format.

The primary that Ricoh does to any drive when it is first installed in a machine is to install the directory and allocation structure. If you put it in a PC or any other device and cause any change in those structures, when reinstalled in the Ricoh it will once again be initialized and anything stored like address books or document server might be lost.

For simplification of process, I have even tried to clone the hard disk but whenever I try to install the cloned one, it does requires to format it with its own process to work.

In order to "clone" a physical hard drive, you need to use a utility that will do absolute sector copying. The last one that I used was Norton Utilities. That was over 20 years ago. With most current Ricoh even that might not allow you clone a drive from one Ricoh and install it into another if part of what Ricoh places on the HDD when it initializes one is a machine identifier.
