Re: worn pc(d)u's - waste procedure

    Gentlemen,
Meanwhile Ovam (the government department for waste here in Belgium) has informed us concerning pc(d)u's:
'Er is een onderscheid tussen afgedankte goederen met een elektronische component en deze zonder. Deze met chip vallen onder het AEEA en hiervoor geldt de aanvaardingsplicht op het containerpark'
So, parts with a build-in chip can be offered at the recycle park for free.
A developerbox contains a TD sensor.
A pcu used to have an ID sensor, but not anymore these days.
So, no electronic part on a pcu, I think?
I'm glad for you that Ricoh come to collect the worn parts.
    We will interpelle Ricoh Belgium!
    Thanks for all your input.

      Hi everyone,

Sorry to hijack this thread, so to speak, but it's somewhat relevant to what I have to say. I am currently writing an assignment on how such waste is disposed of. I have compiled a short survey, it's anonymous, you don't need to leave any personal information like your name or an email address.

I would appreciate if you could spare 2 or 3 minutes of your time to fill it out.

      Thanks a lot.

And how do you dispose the pc(d)u in Greece?

As far as I know, there isn't one neat way to do it. I do what others have also pointed out in the survey, which is sort out plastic and metal parts and throw it in recycling. Stuff like drum units I drop off at a local computer chain store that has a recycling bin for consumables, but I really have no idea what they do with it. Waste toner and developer, well there's no specialized place to dispose of it so it unfortunately goes to the bin. I have asked around but this is what everyone seems to be doing as far as waste toner is concerned.

I contacted Konica Minolta in Belgium which I think are the headquarters for Europe, if I can get a shipping label to send used consumables and waste toner boxes back but never got an answer.

Most drums are made up of metal, probably aluminum. If you have any nearby metal fabrication companies they may take them to add to their waste metal recycle bins. SAame is true with other small metal parts, just separate them according to the type of metal.

In Belgium we are the recycling champs of the world (yes that is true).
                  We have these different disposables:
                  - green (leaves, branches, vegetable,...) => are made to compost (good for any (gardening)soil)
                  - PMD (metal, plastic, pet bottles)
                  - paper
                  - clothes & shoes
                  - all others.
At the recycle center we drop building-woods, bricks, plaster, KGA (small dangerous disposables as paint, developer, toner)
Electronic waste, such as TV & radio are repared at a special office and sold as second hand with waranty.
Even the clothes and shoes are washed and cleaned and offered secondhand.

It is called "closing the cycle": no more waste, all is recycled (as much as possible) and/or polished and resold...

Other than clothing and shoes we are headed in the same direction here in California. Even cardboard and paper that have food waste on them will be going to the compost bin.

                      Forgotten to mention: glass.
Also within every square mile you can deposit glass in a glass container; green separate from transparant .
