Ricoh 401 Toner Cartridge Setting Error during firmware update

I was using the firmware update tool to update firmware on an MP 401.
About at 50 percent complete, the 401 gave a Toner cartridge setting error (Toner cartridge is not set correctly) will not clear.
Checked the contact pins for the toner chip, they are good.
Did NOT lose power during the update, ran to 100 percent, even with the error showing but instead of showing complete it showed error
I set the printer to a different IP address to avoid the risk of someone printing during the update.

OEM toner and Drum unit, this system had never had this error. Tried new toner and different drum- Same error

    Any help is appreciated

I don't use the update tool, but have heard reports of various problems from some who do. Speculations of wrong firmware getting to the machines (?) The consensus seems to be "Use at your own risk!" (Sorry and Good Luck...)

There seems to be a rash of problems lately from people trying to use the firmware update tool with entry level models.

I quit using RFUT. It caused issues in half the units I was updating. They all recovered by updating using a SD card.

From another thread on a different machine in SP 7-931 Toner info being reset during a FW update can cause this.

On my problem 401, All the toner info settings are now 0h. On another working 401 (SP 7-931-04 ) Area ID is 2h.
Where can changes be made for the Toner info ? SP 7-931

As I recall, when updating via SD card the instructions tell you to disconnect the network cable and any Fax line to prevent interference. With RFUT you have to leave the network connected. Any hiccup on the LAN or WAN can interfere.

I've had no issues with the Rfut, until now. But in an office, I change the IP address to prevent an accidental print. I also disconnect the fax line.

I'm updating my problem 401 now with an sd card, I'll report back with results

Re: Ricoh 401 Toner Cartridge Setting Error during firmware update

My apologies everyone....it turned out to be a bad Toner chip (pins) reader in the 401 itself. Replaced the assembly and everything is good.
Funny how this occurred right in the middle of a firmware upgrade, customer has had this over a year and never had toner cartridge setting issues.

Thanks for all the input, if anything I will only do firmware updates when necessary.

                Cheers !
