    [Misc] SSL on LD118

Just wondering if anyone knows if the LD118 is capable of SSL and if so, how to enable it. We have a customer that has had an LD118 for many years (unfortunately, has no interest in upgrading). Recently, all of the free SMTP servers from Spectrum (Charter, Adelphia, and whatever they are calling themselves this week) have stopped working. They all operated on port 25. I have been able to change most of our customers to more modern SMTP servers but have been unable to find anything that works on this old machine. I am assuming the issue is that there is no SSL (at least not that I can find).

If anyone knows of how I can get scan to email working on this machine I would greatly appreciate it.

    Thank you.

It is more likely that they have gone to requiring TLS/StartTLS. Now the de-facto standard for almost all SMTP servers. If Spectrum does not provide a Port 25 relay server, the customer's only other option, other than buying newer equipment, the LD 118 was introduced over 17 years ago and is now beyond both guaranteed parts and support availability, is to setup up a local relay on one of their computers using Stunnel.

That model still supported export grade ciphers from the 90's that are comically insecure.

If you need scan to email, STunnel is going to be your best option. You just may need to play around with the settings for something other than Microsoft 365 or Gmail.

SMtP2gGO should work on that old unit, although I don't have anything that old in the field but I do have lots of machines that don't support encrypted connections.
SMTP2GO still offers an unencrypted configuration over multiple ports (25, 2525, 587, 80, etc) - although port 25 is blocked by many ISP's around here.

Note: it does not work with FREE email acounts like Gmail, Yahoo, etc. It Must be a xyz@companyname.com type account

If it needs a custom domain email why not just avoid the middle man and use STunnel? At least that way your email is only remaining unencrypted within your own network and also doesn't have to travel through a third-party server.

I didn't intend to suggest SMTP2GO as a superior option, and certainly would never question your IT expertise, which I have great respect for - although sometimes your posts make my head hurt (That's only meant to be complimentary).

I'm just a guy who works alone and has to do a little bit of everything to make a living - from Sales to Service, and networking.
I've just found solutions through the years that generally work pretty well for me and my clients, and I've had good luck with SMTP2go.

I used Stunnel myself on occasion, but it was several years ago now, and I recall that I personally just found it a little cumbersome, and the requirement of a PC to be on at all times wasn't always practical in some of the small offices I deal with that only have laptops that come and go.

I can definitely understand the one man show aspect. I just see SMTP2Go as something that needs a few more pieces of paperwork for CYA.

Overall, STunnel only has the limiting factor of needing to be on a computer that's always on. In some environments I just create a VM for it; in others, a Raspberry Pi; for some, it just lives on their primary computer and other systems talk to it by hostname.

STunnel is available for a number of platforms including iOS and android mobile devices. stunnel: Platforms

All of that is WAY beyond my scope.

If you can install software and edit a text file, you can get STunnel working.

There's plenty of information online for configuring it. Essentially you just tell it the server to forward the mail to, along with a few other settings.

It's a very simple piece of software.
