Does anyone have any advice (other than avoid) on removing the black toner supply unit located in the depths of this unit. I am halfway into it and thought I'd ask before diving in the rest of the way. Thanks.

Sadly no advice, this is a very old model I would recommend selling a newer.

I have got it out. What had happened was, the auger got bound up, wouldn't add toner, threw up SC 360. I went through a couple used PCDUs with the same results, light copy and eventual sc 360. So now that the culprit is out, clean up begins. lots of toner back in them gears from the failure. I will order part, a hope my old memory holds out to get it all back together when parts come in.
