Confessions from a MP C4500 board jockey

The next day I get a phone call from the Customer training girl who tells me that every time she hits the Document Server key or the copier gets a paper jam the it locks up.
Oh %$#@^*! It!! Go through the loan/ workshop routine again. As I sit staring it the recalcitrant copier a small light bulb starts to glimmer. I find the original ops panel, fit a new touch screen and refit to copier and bugger me it works!!!

At least 50% of IT is a solution looking for a problem.

No pune intended, but this thread really should be renamed to "...Ricoh Board Jockey", because I have been through the same thing over the past two days with a little Savin 9016.

Problem that started this whole mess was "Print/Scan" was not recognized. Tech at our other shop worked his tail off, swaping and changing parts, but to no avail. We deliver a loaner to the customer and bring it back to our shop. We swap the memory module with a known good one and that took care of that. The machine was then handed over to me for testing.

Well, when I turn it on I get a Fax Address Book error. I read, I tried this, I tried that and nothing seemed to work. So, I begin to reflash the firmware. After loading the netfile, the machine reboots and displays the message, "awaiting firmware update" followed by the IP address of the machine. I was updating the firmware remotely, so I decided to try it through the SD card. Nothing! Different message, but same end. So I swap controllers with another known good one and make sure to carry the NVRAM chips over as well. Same problem. Called tech support and he tells me that it sounds like I have bad NVRAM. Swap the NVRAM chips over and clears up that problem. But I still have the address book error, that I can't get rid of.

After lunch, I remember that I had one of these in my pocket from a month ago or so and it was still on my night stand. I run home and grab it, come back to shop, stick in and address book error gone! But!!! I cannot merger the address book to the print/scan SD. Well, it says it did, but it really didn't, because if I take the address card out, the error returns. AAARRRRGGHHHH!!

Then, to top everything else off, one of the other techs comes in and prints a counter sheet off... you know, just being nosey. He brings me the print and shows me that the print has digital dots all over it. Some blocks of dots are lighter than others. It's something I've never seen before and even worse, a problem that was not there before I got a hold of it. I do a few test prints and find that the problem is coming from the IPU.

Knowing I should probably just reset the controller, I looked up at the shop clock and saw it was 4:45... close enough! I got the hell outta there. Unlike you Lagonda, my Friday is just starting.... I hope it's a little more productive.

The first law states that energy is conserved: The change in the internal energy is equal to the amount added by heating minus the amount lost by doing work on the environment.
