@remote is still active and in use, not being retired at all.

The encryption level on the server is being updated from 512bit to 2048bit, you can check sp5-816-087 for the level, 1=512 2=2048.

All machines will use 2048 bit if they are able to.

Only machines older than 11A are stuck with 512, and new firmware will not change that.

I do know that there is an SP to force 512, but it's set for 2048 by default.

Are the @remote appliances still used for the bigger clients and if do how many machines can they handle?

It depends on whether the MFPs are in monitored or managed mode.

The number are actually much higher than that, I just don't remember them offhand.

Most customers who are using it are running Streamline with the @Remote Connector option.

The connector does not require a hardware gateway; it's all software. We see very few of the hardware gateways these days.

Streamline is available in a "Base Only" version, which does not control scanning and printing, so it therefore is much less expensive.,

From the service manual for one of the early appliances, the RC Gate BN1:
Maximum number of devices to be connected
                • Internet encryption communication (HTTPS) Method
                • Controlled devices registered to the Communication Server 100 devices (including a maximum of 5 devices connected to the RS-485 interface)
                • Auto Discovery: 500 devices (including those registered to the Communication Server on the Network)
                • E-mail (SMTP) Method`
                • Auto Discovery 500 devices

Appliances are used to reduce the bandwidth usage on the customer's network and internet connection. If I remember from when I took the online training, there was a table showing when you needed to use appliances. I think that it was for any network with more than 5 registered devices. It might also be possible to cascade appliances.

@Remote is still going strong. Hardware appliances are the only thing being phased out. Embedded @Remote and "Software Appliances" will be supported going forward.

I think the newer models are SP5816-102.
