    Problem with Ricoh Aficio 550

Hello sorry for my bad English but I'm italian.
    I have a problem with a Ricoh 550.
The machine prints the counter as usual.
If I try to make a copy, the lamp scans the original, the memory goes to 99%, the machine says ready but does not copy.
The touch screen especially in the lower part does not respond to commands. I replaced the panel with another used without solving the problem.
I cleaned all memory with sp 5801 but no results.
    Any suggestions?

    A few thoughts:
Print the SMC if you can and look for error codes.
Try unplugging all the accessories, DF, finisher, etc.
Check the duplex connector for foreign material, toner, paper and the like. (I've had the duplex connector cause all sorts of strange problems.)
If your panel is unresponsive in some areas calibrate the LCD panel. If that doesn't help check for pinched or broken wires.
    Update the firmware.
Could also be a HD going bad.

    Good luck!

Relax! This firmware injection won't hurt...but it will take 45 minutes.

This may not be much help, but I remember a TSB issued for that exact problem. I do not have that bulletin or I would send it to you.

The only tsb's I found, looking through my SM, were both of these. They are closer to what is being described, but do not match the exact symptoms.

After looking at your original post again, I was thinking of a different problem. Sorry. I'm glad it's Friday because apparently my brain is fried.

Had a similar on an AF2075 the other week.

After rebuilding all 3 feed stations and the reg unit, I reassembled the machine while calling another Engineer. When I tried to take a copy the machine just "ran on" after scanning. I HAD LEFT THE WASTE TONER BOTTLE OUT OF THE MACHINE!! .... No service code(!) or other indication.

I would check the switches / sensors behind the WTB ... You never know!!

Also, have had some strange faults similar to this due to the Lens Block.

If you have a spare machine I would try swapping this.

Your English is much better than my Italian - I can order a beer and ask for the bathroom... just the important stuff.

I had one of these machines doing the exact same thing. I found the Charge assembly was arcing and it corrupted the NVRAM. Most importantly, it wiped out the LD Pitch adjustments. The counter page was printing at 400 DPI, but when the machine tried to adjust to 600 DPI the values it got from the NVRAM were so crazy it just locked up. I suppose this could also be a physical problem with the laser unit pitch mechanism as well.

I agree with KopyKat - the touch screen is probably out of calibration, and this could also be a symptom of corrupted or failing NVRAM. Hit ClearModes, 1, 9, 9, 3, Stop (5 times) to get to the calibration.

If you can print a counter sheet, you should be able to print an SMC report (SP 5990-004) and see if it logged any SC codes. If not look at SP7403-00x to look up the SC History directly. That should hopefully tell you what are up against. I've seen the transfer get dirty enough to arc as well.

Given the age of that machine, if you find the NVRAM is corrupted you may want to replace it regardless of any arcing problems. It's a pain to get all the codes transfered, and you lose your meters, but you may save a lot of aggrivation, and will probably end up doing this eventually anyway.

If you've never done one the LD Pitch adjustment isn't terribly hard to do, but it does take a "calibrated eyeball" to look at the test pattern and get it right. I find it works best to look at it from a very low angle instead of straight on, but other techs say its just the opposite. Just tweak it a couple of different ways and see what works best.
