Colour MPCs - locked print driver so only B&W can be chosen?

    Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone know if a PS driver can be locked down so user/staff can not choose the "colour" option in MPC driver?

I know a runaround would be to just load a driver for a B&W only machine however i'm not sure if this will have an effect on printing down the track - always seem to come across programs a year down the track which causes problems and it turns out to be incorrect print driver.

so any help would be great. thanks.

I dont think you can with the Post script driver, but i know you can get hold of a program from lanier that allows you to lock out settings in the PCL driver

Know that program from Lanier by chance?

As for the PS driver.. Never use it so not sure. The PCL6 yes, BUT some Apps will override your print driver settings and print in color anyways.

Could install Drivers 2x. Call one XXColor and other SavinXX.

Setup User Codes set 2 codes per person, 1 color, 1 b&w.

Set the B&W restricted on the SavinXX and the Non Restricted in the XXColor.

Either that or install a B&W Driver only like you didn't want to do. Remember Some Applications *cough* Corel *cough* will IGNORE your print driver settings.

I think you can't really lock the drivers for 100%.

The best way is to manage the b/w and color printing rights at the machine. It's possible to lock color printing (and/or copying as well) generally. The next step is setting up at least one user accounts with the rights for color printing. This account would get an user code - this needs to be entered in the printer driver IF the customer wants to print something in color.

Take a look at the user tools -> system settings -> key operator tools

I agree, you can set the machine to require a user code for colour copying / printing but only give selected users (If any!) the code. May be in administrator settings rather the Key operator tools, but the same rules apply.

I think ccbflo is right, its simply called PCL Editor.

with the PCL editor you can completely remove the colour option from the pcl driver so the user cannot select it. Apart from the possibility of some programs overriding the setting, the only way for users to select colour would be to install an unaltered driver.
