I've also had a duff laser unit cause this. LD power settings had gone stupidly high, drum had only done 7k.
It's 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.

            Hit it.

I experience this problem after replacing the OPC using KATUN. only on this model but to other model okay. Anyone have idea for the different between the Katun drum and original one, except from the price...Thanks

I think it depends of the situation when occurs.

After contacting my company for PCB repair it has been confirmed that SC-990 is a HDD problem not OPC.
                  Thanks!!!

From memory, SC990 is a "software performance error" and can occur when any reading goes out of spec. This is often associated with overtoning / dirty machines. It can be caused by dirty laser diodes causing the laser power to max out and (apparently) worn drums causing charge voltages etc to exceed the maximum rating. I doubt the HDD is the cause.

Front door switches (above fuser), Drum, Drum ground shaft and last but not least Laser.
I had one of the Gestetner models of this macine doing the 990 code.
When i replaced these items in order (one at a time) it would work for a while befor the code came back. The laser power would always max out and the code would be SC990. The last item to be replaced was the laser and I have not had the code since (about 6 months).
Any of these items can cause it, I have not seen a hard drive cause it.

                      Hope this helps

Sorry I forgot FIRST thing to try is a complete PM. Especially if the machine is dirty or over toning.

I have same problem with A2045. Sometimes clearing memory helps.
But not in my case. Can you please send me a SM on matabg@gmail.com
Somewhere in service mode you can see what is causing SC990
