    @remote device...

I have this @remote box to replace one that went bad in the field. It just kinda turned up in the office and I have no idea what the network protocols are set to. I have been told that I will be doing something with a crossover cable before I put it up on the network, but I don't know if I need to push some kind of reset (there is a hole) or what. My dealership is new to Ricoh, but I have passed my core basics, color basics, high volume digital competency, color digital competency and knowledgebase tests, so I am becoming more and more familiar and have already done a couple of network installs.

Thanks for looking at my problem...

You shouldn't be allowed to use the @remote system without specific training - a 4 day course. To replace an appliance, you do it on the @remote GUI (specific thing to do it on there) then plug the hardware in on site afterwards.

As zyqwiz said you will need access to the GUI in order to replace the appliance correctly. You will need the serial number for both appliances new and old.

I also agree you should have access to the training before using the system, certainly in the UK that's the way it works. It can be real easy to break @Remote. If you have had no experience I would suggest contacting Ricoh for some assistance.

If you need anything else let us know.

I will DITTO what the previous 2 posts said. I have installed about 100 of these in the last 2 years and if you don't do it right, you will be buying a new one. These is a course on the ricoh Skillsoft site that you should do first. It covers most all of what you need to know.

But if you are brave......here is some reading for you.

        Be afraid,, be very afraid ! ! ! ! ! ;-)

          Lol dramatic!

I actually thought the precourse information 'muddied' the water to a certain extent but running through the unit 'Basil' 'BN' 'External' 'Appliance' what ever you want to call it made everything make much more sense. Kind of once you've done one you've done them all!

And the Embedded version is even easier.

But if you don't have access to an actual physical course in the short term or noone from Ricoh can assist then go through the online learning it should help alot if you run into any problems.

If it had been designed by a sensible person it would be straight forward - way too complicated to do the simplest thing - the reporting portal isn't much good either.

Chris, why don't you just give your local solutions Rep a call. I think I know who that might be, but I would suggest making sure first. If you don't know, call your regional tech rep and they can tell you. They should be able to provide you with whatever info or documentation that you need. If you don't feel confident with the install, they will send someone out to help.

Really it's not that bad to install one, just a hella lot of steps. I would not suggest doing it without documentation in front of you. Also, like the others said, you will need to have access to the Portal so you can uninstall the old device first and run the replacement procedure.

Yup a call would be a great idea.

I actually like @Remote. But for me it's the interface. If the interface was improved it could be alot easier to use and do everything that is needed.

Just as an aside. I have also split the box open (6 screws) and 2 screws to get to the SD card. If the SD card won't read in a PC as a 30MB card with a funky name, the card needs to be formatted, fat32. The the latest firmware from the TSC site needs downloaded, unzipped and copied onto the card.
Then at the MAIN center site the customer information needs to be written down. Do the delete appliance, wait 2 days, make sure that the client is no longer there. Create a NEW account with the exact same information, you will generate a NEW KEY, and wait 2 days for that to be live. Then reinstall the @Remote following all the procedures as if it were NEW.

See why I was talking about having training! And you also need to get registered to Administer your dealerships @Remote accounts.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong but you don't have to go through all this to replace an appliance. Just use replace appliance in the server gui.

You are right, you can do it thru the replace appliance. But the last time I did that it cost my dealership, that is owned by Ricoh, $500 + from Ricoh for the device. It wasnt a free exchange.

Please correct me if I am wrong....

My training course was done by the guy that administers all of Ricoh Europe's own field appliances and he said he's never known one that you couldn't get going with a hardware reset.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by a hardware reset, but I wil assume that you are refering to the DIP switches in the unit and the reset procedure. I had a few that didn't fix with that, and I formatted the SD and it still didn't work. I put in a NEW 64 MB SD card and added the sytem software, and WHALLA!!! It's ALIVE... But I still hade to delete the company account and recreate.
