Ricoh MP 4500 will not interface

My organization recently inherited a Ricoh Aficio MP 4500 as we moved into a new office space. While trying to configure this printer, I have been unable to do anything related to interfacing it with other devices.

It has a USB and ethernet port, however, connectibility cannot be established through either. The lights on the ethernet port light up once during startup, but never else. The switch shows the port as completely inactive (and usually shows amber when a device is connected but non-functional). A computer connected via USB cannot see the device.

In the settings menu (user tools / system settings), there is no "interface settings" tab whatsoever. This is still the case when logged in as the admin (password settings were still set to default).

Also, I notice that several of the menu modes (the wide, rectangular buttons to the left of the main display, under the user tools button) are empty. There is one for scanning, one for printing from a stored file, but the other 3 slots just have a blank cover.

I printed a counter sheet, and it shows 30,000+ copies, but not a single print or fax (555 A3/DLT, 819 Duplex and no staples).

I am unsure if the machine was specifically manufactured with minimal capabilities, but that just seems like a waste.

    Any help would be appreciated,

    Thanks,
    BDKinst

The printer, fax and scanner functions are all extras to the base machine. So its sounds like the case on this device.

The reason is cost not all customers want printing, fax or scaning on a device.

The options are activated with special sd cards being inserted, plus 256mb addtional memory being fitted and the usb and network connectors being activated.

The reason there is a network connector is apart from printing and scanning the device can be browsed into and may be an @remote device (If i recall correctly) ie a device which is montiored online.

Its true print scan is an option but the buttons would not be there if the options werent installed. Unless of course, someone has removed them.
The other possiblity is that they have been disabled. Look at SP 5985 Enable NIB and USB

Are you sure its three blanks covers from memory the top two are there by default which are normal copier function and doc server. Then you got fax, printer, scanner which are the bottom three.
You could check in user modes you would see a facisimile options, print and scan button on the touchscreen.

Another way to look is to check what sd cards are fitted. (Dont try to wipe or read these on a normal pc its the software on them thats worth the big money not the physical disk. Although the cards can be merged there should be one with something like print option on it. If its not there and no option on the user menu then its looking like its not fitted.

          Hi
Take a look at the controller unit - rear left hand side.
There should be an SD card in slot C1. You might need to unscrew a cover to see.
Without this card the machine will not print.
The good news is that your local Ricoh dealer can upgrade it for you.

You may have already done this, but you need to install the correct driver on your PC. These can be downloaded from RicohUSA free of charge. If your connecting to the network, you need to configure your machine settings in user tools> system settings> interface settings.

I just reread your post. If no interface tab, could be something wrong with your NIB.

Just to summarize, paulg and FRIDGEMAGNET are correct. The fact that your machine has the copy and print button and has blank place holders in the spots below means the fax/print/scan options weren't purchased with the machine. You can still purchase these options from Ricoh.

Jomama46 is also correct. You can enable the machines NIC via SP mode however without the option purchased and installed it still won't allow you to print or scan.

mikadonovan is incorrect. Drivers won't help, nor will changing the NIC.

bdkinst, I suggest you ignore my post as I was incorrect. I will make it a goal for life to only post suggestions that have been approved by category5.(I wonder if he has ever given incorrect advice?) I do my best to be helpful on this site, but occasionally my mind gives way a little after a hectic day. Guess I'm human. Sorry.

Or simply press the User Tools button and see whether "Printer Features" and "Scanner Features" are there - if not, you haven't got them.

It's a bit heated in here these days, isn't it?!!

Check sp 5828-91 to turn on the Web Operation. Change it to 1 to enable.
