Customer called saying not receiving any faxes. I called from a fax, using the handset, fax picked up and went through fine. Tried again just placing it in tray inputting number and hit send. Would not go. Use the handset, iit will pick up and receive fine. If you call the fax from a phone it pciks up and you get the fax tones. Phone line is plugged into the Line jack, it is set to auto answer. It sends out fine. I turned off ECM but still no luck. Seems like the phone line to me, but why would it work when you use the handset at teh other end?? I had people send while I was at teh location, fax made no noise, never said communicating. Help!!

This is probably a long shot, but maybe the problem is with the customer's phone company's central office (CO), where a manually dialed number (a phone) is dialed considerably slower than a fax calls out, and it's not distinguishing the tones properly.
Did you try replacing the (troubled) fax with a plain old phone? If so, did it ring and perform normally?
If the sustomer has another fax line in the bilding, you may want to try your machine on that line.
