Methinks that'll be the laser shutter. There was a firmware update for this posted a while ago, just update the machine to the latest version. If you're going to do the firmware, do them ALL, not just the engine and controller.
It's 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.

    Hit it.

I'm not sure that it could be the shutter unit, it's only affecting the black and just in the middle (but then I may wrong). Looks more like a dirty laser slit glass or transfer from the ITB. Check the laser glass slit first (might as well pull the laser unit out and clean all of the slits), if clean then look at the ITB unit, check the black transfer roller under the belt.

Had one the other day where the firmware upgrade and the SP mode shutter open/close position adjustment didn't work, ended up removing the shutter.

Your colors are probably light in the center also, just not as noticeable as the black.
Don't take that toner with me!

It Is the shutter, but may not be firmware. Firmware was an issue on very early machines but should have been sorted.

I had one of our guys call today from a customer with the same issue on an MP2500. The machine had up to date firmware (I think ver 1.11?), new Black PCU and dev, but still the same problem. He removed and cleaned the laser optics / polygon mirror motor and lubricated the shutter with some success but the fault did return. Ricoh suggested firmware and were suprised when the machine was up to date (!).

He removed the shutter and the copies are now perfect! New shutter and I believe new shutter motor on order.

Remove the shutter and do the firmware.

unlikely, unless it's an early machine

It's an MPc3000, there's the possibility that it's more than 3 years old now.

I'm not saying that I'm right, but I could be!

We just remove the shutters as soon as we see this and the problem is gone! No need to touch the shutter motor.

                      just to update this

the machine was installed around 6months ago and was new.
we upgraded the firmware which made no difference so we removed the shutter and the problem was solved

                      thanks for the help peeps
