New to site, lots of good info. Gotta mp5500 is lite in same location on scan and adf. Cleaned all glass and mirrors including glass in pcu. Print jobs OK. another tech suggested exposure lamp. Not sure what to try next.

Did you check the developer unit to see if it had good even brush of toner on the mag roller?Totoro -
If prints are ok, sure sounds like Scanner lamp or worst, the SBU board/Lens assembly.Comment

I agree it's most likely optics related. Can you post a sample image or be more descriptive of the light area (is it along the entire length of the image in the main scan, sub scan or is just a particular spot?). Also check and clean the white reference plate just to be sure, though I've never seen them get dirty enough to cause a problem.Comment

The MP 5500 is fitted with a CIS unit in the ADF so you can scan both sides of the document in one pass. If you copy in duplex mode does the problem occur on both sides of the copy?At least 50% of IT is a solution looking for a problem.Comment
