    Aficio 1045 - SC672

    Hi guys,
I recently encountered a problem with a customer's machine throwing out SC's 672. After checking out the power supply unit, IOB board, BICU, controller board & replacing them the problem still exist. Finally after replacing the NIB Board the machine works well again. According to the customer, there was a thunderstorm in the area at the time that the machine went bust & throw up the SC's 672. Apparently, his computer which was link to the machine by LAN cable too got hit. I reckoned the lightning surge affected the computer which then destroyed the NIB in the Aficio 1045. I just want to know if is there any recomendation to prevent a similar occurances in the future? And does the customer have to bear the cost of repairs for the resulting damaged NIB?
And by the way, his machines comes under the total warranty scheme.
    Thanks in advance!

Is there a ferrite ring looped into the patch cable? can't hurt!

Service Contracts don't normally cover damages caused by the client's electrical service (at least in the States). Depending on the cost of the damaged part, I would generally waive the charges one time and sell them a surge protector. If they had a true surge protector device (ESP) that we sold and provided them on setup, then it would be covered. If they had their own device installed, then they would have to file a claim with that manufacturer (if the fine print allows for that). Not one of those elcheapo power strips you get at the hardware store, good protection comes at a cost. Ricoh has always used ESP brand and just announced a partnership with Innovolt. Most devices will protect the power input, phone line and network input. You can also purchase network surge protectors that connect inline with the CAT5 cable.
That being said, you have to take into consideration your relationship with the customer (are they a long term client, are they a large company that provides lots of income to you, will you lose them if you charge them?). Being it's a 1045, now looks like a good opportunity to upgrade them.

A Lightning strike is classified as an act of God.
His insurance should cover it, but you shouldn't.
Why do they call it common sense?

If it were common, wouldn't everyone have it?

          Thanx guys!
i managed to get the customer to compromised on a 50-50 basis.
HOWEVER IN FUTURE, the customer has agreed to bear the full cost in the event of a similar ( lightning strike ) occurance..
          Appreciate all your help & advice...teebee1234 & nmfaxman !
