    [Error Code] Ricoh c3228 - sc220-2 error

From what I can glean from the manual it's laser unit problem - is it just contaminated by excess/flying toner? B/w is fine, but color is not possible.
Disassembling laser unit and cleaning the inside - will it help fixing the problem, or is it not even worth the try? I'm finding this rather frequent on some Xerox color models.
    thanks

That's a laser sync error for Magenta. I doubt that there's toner in there (sealed pretty tight), more likely a bad laser sync board for color. It wouldn't hurt to clean it - remove and blow out the sync boards (4- 2 in front for bk/Y, 2 in rear for M/C) and reinstall. You might also try doing a Mirror Positioning Motor Reset as follows...

    Perform sp2995-1
Rotates the mirror position motors (CMY) by 250 pulses clockwise; then by 125
pulses counterclockwise. This moves the mirrors back to the initial position. Then, the
settings of SP2-908-002 to 004 are reset to 0.
When the line position adjustment fails, it is one of possible causes when the mirror
position motor locks. Performing this SP mode can move the mirrors back to the
original position if it locks. Then, do the forced line position adjustment (SP5-993-
    002).
If that fails, then I would suggest replacing the sync board. Part #B1325185

    From the manual
    1. Turn the main switch off and on.
    2. Check the cable connection between
front (for K&Y) or rear (for C&M)
    synchronizing detector board and the
    LD unit.
    3. Check or reinstall the front (for K&Y)
    or rear (for C&M) synchronizing
    detector board.
    4. Replace the front (for K&Y) or rear
    (for C&M) synchronizing detector
    board.
    5. Replace the laser optics-housing unit.
    6. Replace the BCU.
    7. Replace the PSU.

Wow, excellent, thanks for this thorough and succinct explanation, sure saves me the hassle of taking the laser unit apart.
Will check those boards and follow up with the procedures.

Upon testing (and disassemble/clean the surface of the boards, testing connections) - SP5-993-
002 failure - locks up the machine.
Do I need to replace all four boards, or only the two corresponding to C/M ?

It turned to be dirty laser unit - disassembling, cleaning mirrors did fix the problem.
