How to format the hdd on a savin sdc555

Customer has a Savin SDC555, they want to clear the hard drive before they send the machine back to the dealer. I need to know how to get into simulation/maintenance mode and how to format the HDD. also just as a backup is there any sort of digital copier HDD formatting software that is available to download to a labtop to bring with us in case the simulation formatting doesn't work?

Formatting the HDD using the format function on the copier is like formatting a pc hard drive. It only erases the address tables of the files so it's not readable by the device and eventually gets overridden later by subsequent jobs. The files can still be recovered by someone with a little knowledge and special software. The new Ricoh policy just started is that the customer signs a release form when we remove a copier from their site, giving up control of the HDD. They are given the option of buying the HDD that's in it ($350 we were told at a service meeting) to cover our costs of replacing them (flat cost, whether it's a single drive or a 4 pack RAID like on the 3260).
I'm sure there is software/freeware available to do a NSA/DOD type of formatting with your laptop. I don't have any suggestions readily available but I'm sure someone will post some sites soon.
To format using the device, use SP5-832-001

To do a proper job order the data overwrite option that I've highlighted in red below. Once installed erase the clients data then uninstall and it can be used on other clients equipment.

You would still have the cost of installing new HDD's so the machine is functionable. Having the data overwrite option as a in-house tool enables the cost of it to be spread out among several clients.

what adverse affects will come from doing a full DoD standard overwrite then popping it back into the machine? any error codes or anything or will we just have to reformat the HDD in the machine after we wipe it? Tell me the SDC555 doesnt have a RAID setup....

Ricoh devices store data in proprietory format so it's highly unlikely Joe Public is going to be able to recover it. If the MFD HDD format is not secure enough for the customer, you could either sell them the drive or remove it for them to wipe and then reinstall it. Otherwise it's a 4 pound club hammer.

There are no adverse affects from removing the drive, reformatting to DoD/NSA standards with a 3rd party utility then reinstalling the drive. Provided that once you reboot you reformat the drive in SP mode so that the drive(s) are repartioned correctly.

In this age of data security dont forget that sensitive information is also stored on the controller and NV-RAM. (Network settings/ File Transfer settings, user account credentials etc)

One caveat though, if you have multiple RAID drives (3260c(4),MPC6000(2)) and and do a standard format, they will not work again in the device. I'm not sure if there is software or a certain procedure that will do a special formatting, maybe someone can post suggestions.

sp mode? we work mainly on kyocera and konica minoltas so bear with me...how do we reformat in sp mode to re-partition the drive?
