    MP4000/5000/4001/5001 - Paper Dust - Reg Cleaner

    Hey Guys,

I've a few machines with a very low dev-lifespan because of paper dust (wich ends up in the dev because of the f*cking toner recycling concept). Too much paper dust in the dev leads to sprinkes and spots on the printouts but I guess that's not a news^^

Well I've noticed that the affected machines doesn't collect much dust in the dust collector drawer also there's usually a lot of dust in this reg-roller ceaning unit wich is snapped on the metal-reg roller in the vertical transport.

I did now disassemble the cleaning-felt wich is suppose to remove the dust from the rubber-reg roller and you won't believe how much paper dust got stucked there (the machine did just 220k printouts with middle/low class paper quality). In this state the cleaning mechanism does apply more dust on the reg roller that it's capable to remove. Also the position of this sponge-felt seems useless to me - hard to describe and not illustrated in the service manual, that's why you should take a look if you find a machine with paper dust/dev issues.

        You are welcome.

Here's a very rough schematic draft of the design (flaw):

        regiroller.jpg

You can see both reg rollers, the paper guide plate and that brown thingy is the cleaning felt wich is suppose to remove the dust (yellow) from the roller so it fell down into the drawer (green). That blue part doesn't exist - I'll get back to it later in this post. Unfortunately the running direction is working vice-versa so sooner or later the paper dust is going to built up over and right behind the cleaning felt towards the paper pass.

I removed the felt completely at the last machine I've visited. The customer is very picky so I should know if the machine is running better with our without a felt (there's still the cleaning unit for the other roller left - basicly like the old NAD and Adonis with reg roller mylar modification.

Another idea is to move the felt left from the drawer (the blue colored addition) but it didn't look easy to manage this. I was thinging about using this red type felt type wich can be found on the transfer unit - unfortunately I don't have much time to dig into this but I'll try to keep up..
