Are you talking about using it with @Remote or just for the user to be notified by email directly by the device when there is an issue? For just to be notified by email, basically all you need is to have smtp setup on the device (if they can scan to email then you're good). From there you just use WIM and go into auto email notification and input the desired recipient(s) into whatever groups and select who will receive what notifications (waste toner nearly full, sc error, door open, etc...). Are you more concerned about security or just the general idea of how it works?

This is from the Global Knowledge Base....

    Configure Auto E-mail Settings
    1. Open a Web browser, and then enter "http://(printer's address)/" in the address bar.Top Page of Web Image Monitor appears.
When setting SSL, a protocol for encrypted communication, under environment which server authentication is issued, enter "https://(printer's address)/".
    2. Click [Login] on Top Page of Web Image Monitor. The window for entering the login user name and password appears.
    3. Enter the user name and password, and then click [Login].For details about the login user name and password, consult your administrator.
    4. In the menu area, click [Configuration], and then click [Auto E-mail Notification] in "Device Settings".The dialog box for making notification settings appears.
    5. Make the following settings:
      • Items in the Notification Message column: You can set this according to your needs, for example, the printer's location, service representative contact information.
      • Items in the Groups to Notify column: E-mail notification addresses can be grouped as required.
      • Items in the Select Groups/Items to Notify column: Select groups for each notification type, such as printer status and error. To make detailed settings for these items, [Edit] next to [Detailed Settings of Each Item].

You pick under what conditions that the device generates the email and whom to send it to (ex. - one person can be designated to receive notices when toner is low/empty, paper is low/empty, out of staples, door open, etc., another can be notified when there is an sc code, jam, @Remote fail, etc.). There are check boxes to select on which issue should be alerted to which recipient. The main one I make sure to enable is "used toner nearly full", as most users miss the notice on the display and then call in for service once it's full and puts the machine in a down condition. You can also further edit the settings to wait a certain amount of time before the email is generated after the fault, 5 min is the default.
