    I guess I wasn't clear, the 3245c had issues (rarely) with the mirror surfaces getting dull on the trail edge causing the beam to scatter and giving fading density at the end of the main scan. The shutter on the mpc's can block the beam due to not fully opening, giving the same symptom.

      Ive had this a few times and found it to be the black LD itself, If it was on all colours its often the front/rear positioning guides

        I had something similar to this on a smaller Ricoh color box. It was a roller under the ITB out of position causing uneven K. CMY looked fine.

          I tried all the ideas you all gave me, still couldn't get a decent enough black copy to do the other color adjustments. I swapped laser units with another and black copys were perfect! This was a copier we were going to purchase for resale if we could solve the problem. We didn't purchase it. Thanks for all the ideas.
