Aficio AF-1224C, code SC-571.

Have no great experience with Ricoh since I'm a Minolta guy. Machine is very far away out of my territory so if I go there I should be prepared as much as possible. Machine is showing service code SC-571 and having around 40K on the clock.

What to do please. Any do's and/or don'ts?
In case it has to be transported to my workshop can it work without the optional cassette deck and sorter without changing configs?

If you can, stay far away from these machines. Ricoh has made some very fine machines, but this one is a big piece of .....

Anyway, SC571 is an oil overflow error in the Fusing Unit. Could be a misplaced Oil Unit/Fusing Unit. Defective Oil Overflow Sensor. There's also a bulletin about firmware. The machine can operate without finisher. If you don't remove the bridge unit, you get an error, but the machine will work.

Honestly - you MUST call in sick for this one. I cant stress enough - get a tech out there who has worked on and knows the Ricoh ways, otherwise you will most likely be found hours later in a featal position sobbing uncontrollably behind the machine. You have been warned.

True dat.Could just be dry and need to be filled & force primed... I think that code alone has like 27 TSBs... Run... Save yourself. -I

OK, I managed to reset service code SC-571. De machine makes "colored" copies now. A little fuzzy, the blacks a little greenish but you still can call them errr.... Colorcopies.

Customer might be satisfied with it. However the fuser looks for me terrible with worn rollers, a mark on the fuser film and lots of gunky gooey stuff.

I take a strictly "fit on failure" approach to these things, there aren't that many left that I go to, but there are still a few left that pop up now and again to ruin my day.

The oil application roller (black roller) on the fuser belt has definitely seen better days as a good chunk of it's coating is missing, I would replace it if you can get hold of a replacement as oil starvation will quickly ruin the fuser belt. However I usually just replace the full belt assembly as and when it fails. If the pressure roller is starting to look somewhat black or dirty red (as opposed to bright red) then that too is probably on it's last legs. Clean the two metal cleaning rollers (one in the oil supply unit and the other against the press roller) and clean the accumulated funk from the oil application wick (the black area at the top of the big chunk of felt that goes down into the oil reservoir) especially if the customer is complaining that the machine is making a "groaning" noise when they do a fairly long run on it.

If the copy looks somewhat blurred, crash stop the machine with part of the copy in the fuser, if it looks good unfused but blurs once fused, then I think it maybe time for a full rebuild.

Agreed, but a black dev unit might be a good idea also if you are getting deletions down the feed direction. These units are the most frequent non-user error cause of poor copy quality on these things in my experience. Don't look at the expected life that Ricoh quotes, I don't think I've ever seen one reach that figure ever. You can try and recover the unit by turning the roller in the reverse direction to remove the accumulated toner clumps, but I'd give 2-1 odds that's you'll be back within a week.

The best idea is to get sales in to flog them a new machine, If you get an MPC2800 or similar machine in there, the customer will be extremely happy with it I guarantee because practically anything is better than a 1224c in terms of speed and copy quality. Lets face it, A set of cyan, magenta, yellow and black crayons with tracing paper would give a higher quality, quicker and less labour intensive copy that this piece of junk.
