    File Format Converter Type B

Can someone explain in crayon for me what the exact purpose of the File Format Converter Type B is? I have a Savin C3528.

    Thanks so much.

It converts documents that are scanned to the mfp's harddrive (which are in Ricohs proprietary format) into PDF/TIFF format so that they can be downloaded to the users PC using the WIM or Desktop Binder. The latest generations of MFP's have this capability standard.

Thanks so much. So no real chance of a file image from a copy made on the machine being recovered? Its a real important document that was executed and copied on the machine. Now that document is mysteriously missing. Is there any way that can be done on a Savin C3528?

If you can't see it on the Doc Server, you might try webbing in and see if you can find it that way. If so, you will only be able to print it out without having a file format converter. Files on the newer devices that are scanned in using the Scan to File function don't show up in the doc server but can be viewed using the web interface. Not sure if that could be the same situation you have.

Thanks. Hope I am not being a pain. I just copied the document on the machine. I was told, maybe wrongly, that the Savin c3528 actually writes an image to the hard drive for every copy. It has two 40gb hard drives. I was told one is the actual storage for documents intentionally saved on it and the other had space to hold images of scans using the "copy" function. This machine only has 21,000 images using the copy function.

I have all of the scanned files using the scan function since they were directed to my server hard drive by user (we only have 4).

When I "web" in using WebMonitor using the local IP address of the C3528 on our network, I don't see any images. In short, are the images from using the copy function just gone? Could they be on the other 40Gb drive and not recognized without the File Format Converter de-encrypting them for the WebMonitor or Desktopbinder to see?

Crap, I really need to exhaust every possibility to reprint a copy of this document that has signatures on it. I only need to print that image that was copied.

          Thanks so much.

You're correct on how the HD stores the images. Unfortunately, once a copy is scanned and printed the subsequent copies made will overwrite that data (unlike a document that is scanned to the Document Server where it is held in a separate partition). Theoretically, it may be possible to recover some previous data because generally the location of the file is deleted from the FAT (just like when you delete a file from your pc) and the data resides there unseen until it is eventually overwritten. Because the data is in a proprietary format, you wouldn't be able to just attach the drive to a computer and just undelete it. However, there is forensic software available to do this and companies that will attempt to recover data, but I'm sure at great cost and no guarantees.
... Also, the longer it's been since that document was copied, the more likely it is completely unrecoverable.

Here is a link to a site that gives a pretty good description on how this all works....http://www.faxworldcom.com/secure.html

Thanks, do you recommend any company(s) that can do the recovery from this proprietary format?

              I have got to try.
