The metal protector is not attached to the glass. Sounds like the end of the glass is broken off. Use a pencil eraser to get it out. Also, these guys are right about the front cover safety switches. They get caked with toner and cause this problem. See the attached file.

Quick instructions:

1. Vac the machine to within an inch of it's life, don't put your vac anywhere near the laser unit.
2. Take the DF off.
3. Take the scanner unit off.
4. Remove the cover above the fuser.
5. In the front cover above the fuser you'll see a small brown cover with the front door mag catch on it, remove it.
6. Remove the fusing fan.
7. You can now access the switches. Take them out and clean them with IPA solvent but make sure you put them back in EXACTLY the same order you took them out.
8. Reassemble.
9. Go into sp modes and clear the laser beam pitch data, then run initial settings for 400 and 600dpi.

If it still does it, replace the switches. 2 x 1204 2521 and 1 x 1204 2529.

After that, if it still does it (and I bet you've still not replaced the seals on the PCU and dev unit) change the laser unit.

Lubricate the pin of the beam pitch motor, have had these seize when toner has dropped down from the toner hopper.

You have the fault when its printing because its switching to 600 dpi and the beam pitch motor should be driving.

It makes the scanner a little less heavy when you go to pull it off.

Well, i think it's time to stop posting about repair and cleaning procedures....
To everyone : make a video 'HOW TO....' and post it to 'you tube', much more helpfull and become a protagonist!!!!
(There's no difference between end users and technicians anymore....)

finally i remove laser unit(2 screw) and open Laser unit cover [4 screw on it] and clean the front laser unit near Glass
and reassemble the unit and sc322 eliminated
