    MP C3500 Hard disk error

Had a machine go down with a bad HDD. There was no error message, but it never came to ready. I unplugged the drives, and basic copy and fax features were OK. I only had one disk (of another brand) handy, so tried a bit of trial and error, but never got the machine up and running with them connected, and I got errors like SC860, and 925.
I haven't dealt with replacing drives on a multi-drive unit before, and I read a post somewhere that they need to be a matched set? Is that correct? There were no confirmations on that post, but that would explain my difficulty. I also wonder if there's a max size, as I can only access 80Gb drives and up right now.
    Thanks in advance.

Nothing special, install, go into Service Mode, 5-832 - HDD format "all",
turn machine off & on. Done. ( of course you dont know which of the 2 drives are bad)

      Thanks Jo
It went off without a hitch today. It had me scratching my head yesterday, before understanding the HDD's had to be a matched set.

From what I understand the machine uses the two drives in a striped RAID configuration hence the need for matched pairs.

Ive gotten away with only changing one of the HDDs in a MPC4500 before, out of desperation mind you one of the pair I had with me was bung.

The machine had an SC865 -01 (HDD: Access error) not that the -01 is in the service manual but by process of elimination I figured out the guilty party was the HDD closest to the board, swapped it with the one good one I had left and after formating away she went.

I haven't had any issues with the machine since (4 months) but the HDD I used was out of a scrapped MPC4500 so was probably matched.

Yes, One from the same make machine wouldn't be an issue i don't think. My trouble was, that I only had a completely different make (Seagate) that I was trying to replace it with, and didn't have access to any parts machines or otherwise. I picked up a couple new ones from my local electronics shop and all was good. I figured new ones would be a more long-term solution too
