Lanier LD425 - dead touch screen

The touch screen on my LD 425c quit responding to touch today. Everything else seems ok: The screen is lit, the push buttons on either side of the touch screen are still functioning, but I get no response to finger touch on the screen itself.

    Is this a common failure?
Should I just call for service , or can I get the parts and replace myself? (I'm an engineer with reasonable skills.)
I don't have a service contract because I am a small-time user. Calling for help is going to cost me at least $200 - trying to avoid that.

    I'm in the Dallas area.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

There is a problem with the touch panels of the Ricoh/Lanier/Infotec/Gestetner... machines. There's a replacement program for this problem, so the new touch panel should not cost you much.

Its 1993. I've had great luck pulling the scrren out and cleaning out any junk that gets wedged between the screen and the frame. So clean it out and then do the calibration. GL
Color is not 4 times harder... it's 65,000 times harder. They call it "TECH MODE" for a reason. I have manual's and firmware for ya, course... you are going to have to earn it.

            Thanks to all who replied.

I had never thought about "junk" around the perimeter of the screen. When I pulled up on the plastic housing along the bottom of the screen with a fingernail, the screen started working again. Apparently pressure was being applied to the screen that was not normal and it had obscured its ability to respond to touch.

I unmounted the screen and cleaned out the "dust" that was under the edges. It still does not work perfectly, so I am going to replace the panel, but it got me up and going again.

            Again, Thanks!
