Greetings. I was wondering if there is a way to view the data on a Ricoh Aficio 3030 hard drive. My company had a "keep your hard drive" agreement with our copier company that allowed us to pull the hard drives from the copiers when we got new replacements. The company showed up at our remote facility without notifying us first and took the copier with the hard drive still inside. Now we have to try to access the data on the drive to determine what sensitive information may have been contained on it when it was removed from the facility. Can anyone provide any suggestions on how to access that data? I tried hooking the drive up to an Ubuntu 10.10 install but had no luck. In Windows 7 64-bit the drive shows up but is not mounted/initialized. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: View Data from Ricoh Aficio Hard Drive?
Ricoh drives are formatted with a proprietary format. There are methods of reading the data, which are slightly less than fully legal, that you can find online. The CBS report from last year was more hype than anything, remember the story featured a guy who sold products to wipe copier drives and he was demonstrating with some older (and non-Ricoh) machines.
If you're really worried about removing sensitive data, wipe the drive or have the drive re-formatted. Also, Ricoh offers a hard drive encryption option, as well as a data overwrite unit that will re-write the last used portion of the hard drive with random characters. Both are effective, and most of my government customers have them installed.
