    MP C4500

Anyway to pull info off of a bad HDD? Both HDD on a Ricoh MP C4500 went bad. My tech reformatted them and all was fine except of course no info. Tech reset the IP ect and got it printing and scanning. Later that day their IT guy called complaining about the fact that my tech did not back up any info before he reformatted. No am I missing something?
If the HDD became corrupted how was he to have backed up the info? Now I will say this the IT guy restored the info in about 10 minuets. He got the info from somewhere (about 10 email addresses and several docs) the only thing I can figure is he had them backed up on the server somewhere.

He will have had them backed up on something. When HDD's fail in Ricoh kit, the information on them is unrecoverable to my knowledge. The IT person should also know formatting a drive will destroy any data on it.
It's 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.

    Hit it.

I can't believe he restored data from a bad HDD. All data is stored in a proprietary format. You can not pull out the HDD, hook it up on a PC, and view the data on the HDD with some viewer or something. Unless he's got some special magical software...

As you stated, the IT guy probably copied the address book from another device or had it already backed up somewhere. If the HDD was corrupt and device wouldn't boot up then there would be no way to recover that info, the customer is ultimately responsible for having a current backup available. Now if the HDD was just giving intermittent errors and the tech felt the need to format it, then yes he should have backed it up first. Depending on the error, sometimes you can just format particular functions and not erase the address book. It sounds like more of a communication (lack of) issue between the tech and IT. The tech should advise the IT person (or however is responsible) of the situation beforehand and tell them what needs to be done. Time to have a beer summit.....

Don't know if any sectors where stil good.
Copier was locked up. All Buttons worked except for the scan button. First thought it was a bad touch pad, but the reformat fixed it
