Make sure to use the original toner and developer. Saw dev gears break on the MP2510 series but never on the 1018.

the bushings of the screw conveyors tend to get stuck, i would suggest you to change the lower development case as assy.

      Part number is B039-3170

You can get a good used drum unit from RecycledParts.us for $175 or just put in a 1027 pcu for the same price.
Why do they call it common sense?

If it were common, wouldn't everyone have it?

I've never considered trying this because the 1018/ 1027 units look nothing alike, (including the plug connector which doesn't exist on the 1018). Can this be right?

I'm pretty sure a 1027 drum unit won't work in a B039. As far as the dev unit, be sure and get ALL the old developer out with a vacuum before loading new developer, including the gear drive area. Too much developer in these units will cause them to lock up.

bushings wear down allowing play, also if the developer is dead then it tends to fall on the gears thus wearing them out. you can get he gears as parts but you are better replacing the lower casing.

I have never tried this either, we use the 1027 drum in the(sorry Lanier terms) LD122/127/ LD225/325,425/433 but the 18/20's use a different unit. I don't even know if it'll fit in there.. I believe it's a different size(height) and different place it locks into the frame.... I really don't think those are intechangable.
