I would remove the LSU shutter completely.

dirty or clogged mag roller, also clean the laser glass shield, could be bad corona wire and grid.

These machines use a charge roller, not a corona and grid.

ya i relized that after posting i though it was the mp4000 not the 4500, so forget what i said about a corona, i would definatly clean the mag roller though.

The MP4000 uses a charge roller aswell. As this is an intermittent fault I don't think the mag roller is at fault here, when the mag is caked up it is constant faded image. The issue is the laser shutter does not open fully every time the the machine prints. Just remove the shutter and you will be good to go.

Yes im am sure you are correct, and thank you for correcting me, the machine I had in my mind was the 5500, i don't know why I was thinking that, but I dont commonly go by the ricoh model #, most of the machines i have out there are gestetner labeled or lanier or by memory i use the code # very few have the ricoh numbers so I get confused on the forums as it seems almost everyone else uses the ricoh model for reference.

All good mate, not having a dig, just gets pretty confusing when a tech is trying to get a machine running and the advice they receive is of no relevance.

remove the laser shutter completly, had similar before and removed the shutter and never seen the fault again (supposedly a cam that opens the shutter jams)

Yep I agree, remove the laser shutter, we've had lots of problems. The shutter for whatever reason, doesn't open properly, and creates intermittent fading/deletions at one end of the page.

This might be a shot in the dark, are the bushings that run the mac roller still there, I have had this happen to me where the previous tech had removed them to vac out drum unit and did not replace them

PS have you tried printing off in all colours from the OP to eliminate Dev unit replacement on BK
