Ricoh SP-1000, how is the process unit counter being reset when installing a new unit? Fuse or what?

There is a credit card looking thing in the box delivered with the new cartridge, you have to insert it into a slot at the lower left side of the keyboard.If sometimes you feel a little useless, offended and depressed always remember that you were once the fastest and most victorious sperm of hundreds of millions! -

Guys is there a workaround for resetting the machine or disabeling the processunit counter? I have several new process units originally packed, from a wholesaler, but they came without the smartcard.
