Phantom power on paper jam J001 - Ricoh Aficio 3232C (Savin C3210 / Gestetner DSC432)

    Hi folks,

Got a strange one on my hands!

This colour machine has thrown a paper jam twice in the past week, and in both cases, there has been no paper in the paper path. No matter what you do, the jam won't clear. I tried opening every access door, pulling the paper trays etc, but no difference.

What I can't understand, is that the jam doesn't appear in the Jam History at all.

I checked all the sensors in SP5-803 Input check, and they seem OK.

I've read that door switches can be a problem.

Does anyone have any suggestions what the next step should be?

    Thanks in advance,

    MJ

If the jam doesn't show up in the jam history you can almost be sure that the jam was caused by a faulty doorswitch (or push switch). There's one at the left Fusing Unit Cover, that gave me headaches a few years ago.

I have had this same random fault which only seemed to happen on power on, changed front door switch assembly and problem solved. Hope this helps.

In case the machine has a finisher you might also check the belonging doorswitches (including bridge unit). You might also try to "knock" at every door/cover and check if the red error LED flickers at some point.

Yes, that's what was the problem.
Machine would flicker for a micro-second when machine was rocked slightly of front door gently tapped.
Problem solved after front door switch assembly replaced.

Bridge unit door switches also cause these jams.

Thanks for all the replies - much appreciated.

This machine doesn't have a finisher (so no bridge). Duplexer does have a cover switch though.

Looking at the parts manual, the front cover switch, right cover switch, and a pair of interlock microswitches are all in the same assembly.

The one at the left fusing unit cover is given as Paper Exit Cover push switch, so that's a possibility. There also appears to be a Right Lower Cover switch in the manual.

Looks like I need to check these out. I may do it the "proper" way and put a meter on the connectors on the I/O PCB and see what happens when I open and close the various covers. Or - I could try Gifts suggestion and tap each cover until it errors.

Anyway, definitely got something to go on now.

              Thanks again.

Don't mess around with a meter since you can't expect trustworthy reading if a switch fails for mayby just milliseconds. Besides you can also test all switches within the SP mode but it's basicly the same problem that the readings aren't 100% reliable sometimes.

You're probably right about the meter. Although what I can't understand, is that if the switch is only intermittent (and for a fraction of a second), why does the J001 code not clear easily.

It seemed to take a lot of general cover opening and closing (me looking around inside) before it actually went.

I returned to the customers site a few days ago, and gave all the covers a good rattle, but I just couldn't get the code to re-appear. In fact, everything was running smoothly

< oh oh - I just know I'm going to regret saying that when the phone rings tomorrow morning

What happens on some switch failures is that the switch may pass say 5v but not pass enough current or pass say 3.3 volts because the internal contacts are burnt. I saw tons of this with the old Ricoh faxes that used type 30 toner.
