Can you post a scan of the image? Does it appear on copies or prints, or on both? Whats the status of the DV-Units, PCU-Unit? Please provide more info.

More details would be nice but this might be a stucking DV box that's half-sided not moving smoothly to the opc belt during development process.

I know there was something with the two gears that move the DV-Unit to the OPC-Belt.

I recall the mechanism but not really that the gears made issues. For the A1224 there was a little rubber piece modification we needed to add inside the left door to improve the alignment of the dv-boxes in standby position. I rather had this issue rarely with the 3224 - sometimes it happens if the cabled for the toner chips hasn't been put in place properly or just out of the sudden if the guide rail might become too dirty.

Last but not least he might just have a bad dv-box. I've seem them break internally so they don't process new toner and the mag roller isn't completely covered with toner then.

          Oh and not to forgotten:

Sometimes the paper like to take the wrong turn in this engine end ends up below the PCU, maybe blocking parts the laser (then all colours should be blocked out of course)..

I agree with Dev unit causing problem. Does it occur in all colors? Try printouts in single color mode to isolate. There was an old TSB on the previous model (1224 I think)

that stated the front gears could engage slightly different than the rear gears. Remove the dev unit (or units showing problem) and rotate the mainframe gears manually a few times then reinstall and retest. I will try and find the TSB for you if needed.
