MP 6000 with patterned spots when printing only

I have a co-worker that has a MP 6000 that is putting a spots pattern on all pages when printing. He also has the same problem when printing the count sheet and SMC Report.

The machine does not have the problem when copying and when printing the SP test patterns.

The spots are appearing in scan dirrection and always are in the same place.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Those are probably digital artifacts, I would first clean the contacts of the memory dimm's on the controller and if that fails then replace them. There is a tech bulletin regarding this, but it references digital spots off the platen glass and says to replace the dimm's on the IPU as that is what the scanner utilizes. Printing uses the dimm's on the controller so that is the most probable cause.

Curious about why it doesn't occur when printing the test patterns.

It depends on what SP test pattern you are using. SP2902-3 does not use the IPU, SP2902-1, 2 are generated from the Scanner Image Correction Unit of the IPU, and SP2-902-4 comes from the Application Input Circuit of the IPU. It's also possible the problem could be in the BICU or even the NVRAM, but in this case I still think it's the memory dimm. I am attaching the Detail Description of the test patterns that might help isolate the issue.

Thank you for you insight. We were actually leaning towards the memory dimms yesterday. I believe that he indicated that he had already reseated them, I am forwarding this info to him.

Thanks again, and I will report the results back to you.

Definitely memory: I've had a few with bad DIMMs do that to me in the past.
