    Savin 2406WD

Let me disclose I'm a Computer Tech and not a copier tech so I apologise if what may be simple questions to you guys ruffles any feathers. We are in a rural area without a lot of options for this kind of specialized support and the current company in use has done some things with this and a couple other customers that leads us to question the integrity of their advice, so I'm kind of wanting to run the "what they said" past some other eyes.

I have a customer with a 2406WD with the external controller option. Purchased before this company retained my services as a consultant, I personally feel it's a bit overkill for this Office of 4 with no cares for all the accounting features and such the Plotbase software offers. The PC with the controller card is on its last legs however apparently there is no update for Plotbase to migrate this controller to something more recent like Win 7 64 bit. It has also developed an issue where on some jobs the first say 4-6 inches comes out normal, then the rest of the same page offsets about 6 inches vertically and splits on top/bottom of the page. The rendering preview in plotbase looks normal.

So the proposed solution is to get the embedded network controller for this machine (which I feel should have been the original purchase anyways). Since a salesman opened his mouth to my customer offering it they are supposed to be getting the card at cost ($1600 seems high to me considering everything) and ordered a week ago. Today an email comes from one of them that since he didn't realize my customer scans with the machine as well there is yet another addon they will have to purchase to be free from the external controller they were sold in the first place (oddly with no price attached yet for this extra).

I've tried searching for refurb controller parts to at least price compare with no luck since a lot of this information seems to be kept under wraps.

I guess my questions boil down to...

    1) what exactly is requried for this machine to network print/scan to folder without using a dedicated controller PC. I have noted in trying to research there is more than just the network interface purchase depending on whether this machine had been connected before (honestly don't know if it was a new purchase or second hand). I know I can go through the menus on the machine and see options for setting Network adresses and such if that matters.

    2) What is a ballpark we should expect to pay for the parts.

    3) Is there an aftermarket for used parts to accomplish this. Just looking at 1600 for a board for a machine of this age, plus probably more makes me a bit nervous about the investment.

If someone knows about a way to get plotbase working on say Win 7 64 bit, or solving the actual printing issue all the better I suppose.

Edit: Heard back $800 used $1500 new for this extra scanning addon in addition to the $1600 for the internal controller

I'll have to check the req's for the standard controller. As for plotbase no longer supported by Ricoh since the manufacturer has gone away(Ratio from Germany). And for pricing welcome to the wide format world. It's a niche market with a premium for equipment and service.

Yeah I guess just a bad taste for the end user since they were sold the external option at probably $3k , now near another $3k to get rid of it. The company selling it has a reputation for delivery and oops that feature we mentioned in the demo is extra, oh that is extra too. Example a new Xerox they delivered to a different customer they didn't bother to mention something as basic as PCL/PS printing was an additional add on and their main software (Quickbooks) didn't play nice with the default method.

Looking at things like refurb prices on some DesignJets just has me thinking if I had the final say on everything I'd be seeing if someone would buy the Savin and lean towards that route for their smaller use.

If you are looking for some good information on this unit you might try the following link: Ricoh RW-240W Plotbase 3.7.3 Upgrade with Win 7 Support [RW-240-UPGD-373PB] - $1,190.20 : J2 Blueprint Supply Co, Online Store

One of the software guys previously with Ratio is now with this company. He has been very helpful with many of my customers dealing with software and unavailable hardware for different Ricoh units.
